Movement check Fulda

The Fulda movement check project was introduced in the Fulda education region in 2010 as a campaign by the district of Fulda for sustainable promotion of physical activity and health, sports and talent. Since then, the project has been led by the Fulda District Office, which coordinates the project together with the Chair of Exercise and Movement Science at the University of Bayreuth and in association with the Fulda State Education Department, the Sports Department of the City of Fulda, as well as the Fulda Sports District and the participating schools.

The overriding goal of the Fulda movement check is to fulfill the municipal health and socio-political mandate of providing services of general interest and, in this respect, to motivate children to exercise more and lead a healthier lifestyle in the long term.

The central finding of the Fulda movement check 2010-2015 is that the 8-year-old children in the 2nd elementary school classes examined in the Fulda education region have above-average motor skills and, for the most part, perform well above the national reference values (see Bös et al., 2009 and 2016). Particularly in the area of coordination and especially in running endurance, the girls and boys in Fulda are considerably superior to their peers nationwide and are on average at the level of the approximately 20 percent (SDS = 0.8) of the best-performing children nationwide.

In the coming years, the perspective will continue to be pursued of conducting the Fulda movement check as a regular annual and comprehensive sports motor assessment in the 2nd grades of elementary schools in the educational region of Fulda. All schools in the district and the city of Fulda will continue to be motivated to participate.

In addition to the basic check, participants who are particularly talented in sports are invited to take part in the 2nd stage, the so-called talent check, in December of each test year. As with the basic check, the children receive a certificate with their test result and – derived from this – a total of three sport recommendations in the order of personal aptitude between 50 and 100 percent (for statistical reasons, the aptitude level indicated on the certificates is always at least 50 percent). The concrete talent development is made possible by giving the Fulda base coaches of the two most suitable sports the address of the children so that they can contact the parents personally. The aim is to win the children over for a trial training session in a talent development group. This procedure is already very well established in many sports (e.g. judo, canoeing, swimming, cross-country skiing, water polo). Of course, parents can also contact the base coaches through the University of Bayreuth.

A special focus of the Fulda movement check is the promotion of physical activity in children with low motor skills. For example, both overweight children and those with motor deficits are invited to take part in a voluntary exercise promotion program free of charge for a period of six months. After an introductory information session on healthy nutrition, the program consists of a weekly exercise and play session conducted by experts at several locations.
